At the moment, one garbage truck-ful of plastic is dumped into Earth’s oceans every minute. The rate is set to double by 2030, and then double again by 2050. That’s the context in which New York Governor Andrew Cuomo proposed a ban on single-use plastic bags in his state.  “The blight of plastic bags takes a devastating toll on our streets, our water and our natural resources, and we need to take action to protect our environment,” Cuomo said in a statement.

Last week, British Prime Minister Theresa May last week proposed a ban in England on drinking straws, drink stirrers, and cotton swabs.

About 6.3 billion tonnes of plastic waste has been generated in the world so far, according to a 2015 study by Britain’s Ellen McArthur Foundation. That’s equivalent to the average weight of more than 1 billion African bush elephants. Around 90 percent of this plastic will not decompose for at least 500 years — polluting food, water and air.
